Teeth Whitening
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Professional teeth whitening gel uses hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to break down stains that cause discoloration for a powerful bleaching effect. Our dentists carefully measure these bleaching ingredients for each patient to deliver safe and effective results.
What Discolors Teeth?
Teeth can become discolored due to factors both in and out of our control, including:
Age
As we age, our enamel slowly thins and becomes more translucent. As this process occurs, the inner part of the tooth, called dentin, becomes visible. This inner layer is yellow, which can make teeth appear darker.
Tobacco Use
Smoking or chewing tobacco can cause significant dental staining. The tar and nicotine in these products can be absorbed into the enamel of your teeth, causing them to develop yellow or brown stains.
Medications
Some important medications may also cause tooth discoloration. Blood pressure medication, antibiotics, certain types of antihistamines, chemotherapy, and radiation can lead to stains on your teeth.
Dark Beverages
Do you often enjoy a morning coffee or nightly glass of red wine? While these beverages can be a relaxing part of your daily routine, they may be what's causing your tooth discoloration. The harsh pigments in dark beverages can stain tooth enamel.
Genetics
If your teeth are discolored, it's nothing to feel ashamed about. This trait may be out of your control for many reasons, including your genetics. The thickness of your outer enamel can be an inherited trait.
Dental Trauma
After an injury that causes your tooth to crack, chip, or break in some way, your body may respond to the trauma by creating excess dentin in the injured area. Because dentin is yellow, this may cause your tooth to look yellow or dark gray.

Philips Zoom!®
Zoom! teeth whitening provides a safe way for dentists to deliver impressive teeth whitening results that are gentle on enamel. Zoom! uses blue LED light-accelerated technology to activate the hydrogen peroxide-based whitening formula once it is applied to your teeth.
Amorphous calcium phosphate is included as an ingredient in this gel to provide enamel protection and prevent tooth sensitivity. On average, Zoom whitens teeth by eight shades in just one 45-minute session.
BriteSmile®
Like Zoom!, BriteSmile uses a blue LED light to activate a hydrogen peroxide-based gel. The BriteSmile procedure takes a bit longer because it requires three 20-minute bleaching sessions under the blue light. BriteSmile is gentle on teeth and can help whiten your smile while you lay back and relax.
KöR®
KöR is unique in that it can remove tetracycline stains. If your teeth have become discolored after using this antibiotic, KöR can help you get your bright white smile back. In-office treatments typically take an hour to an hour and a half to complete. If you have deep-set stains, KöR may be the whitening treatment for you.
How Much Does Teeth Whitening Cost?
Whitening your teeth at our Staten Island office can cost between $150 and $500. The cost of your teeth whitening experience may depend on which areas of your smile you want to target and how many sessions are needed to help you reach your desired goals.
We offer several financing options, including in-house plans, to help you afford the cost of your treatment. You can even receive an interest-free loan based on prior credit approval.
