Dental Implants and the Replacement of Multiple Teeth
You don't have to live with the cosmetic, functional, and health problems caused by missing teeth. Dental implants offer a permanent solution to replacing individual or multiple missing teeth. At the Staten Island cosmetic dentistry practice of Drs. Alex and Jason Hecht, you will find the latest treatments in restorative, cosmetic, and general dentistry. Dental implants are the most advanced option when it comes to replacing teeth.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are surgically placed titanium posts, which act as a replacement for missing tooth roots. Prior to placement, the jawbone must be assessed to determine if there is enough bone tissue for successful implantation. Once teeth are lost, the jawbone around the missing tooth begins to dissolve. If the bone is insufficient, a bone graft may be performed to rebuild the missing bone and establish a proper base for the dental implant. When there is an adequate amount of bone to support the implant, it is placed within the jawbone. As the bone heals around the dental implant, a permanent bond is formed. After the bone completely heals, which generally takes about six weeks, a dental restoration can be attached to the implant with a connector, called an abutment. The type of dental restoration you choose depends on your desired results and needs.
Types of Dental Implant Restorations For Multiple Missing Teeth
There are three types of restorations for dental implants and all can be used for multiple missing teeth. The types of restorations include:
- Dental Crowns: Dental crowns can be attached to dental implants to replace individual teeth. Though implant-supported dental crowns are best for replacing one to three teeth, they can be used to replace up to a whole set of missing teeth. This option is generally not preferred for replacing multiple teeth as it can be costly in both time and money.
- Implant-supported Bridges: Implant-supported dental bridges are a better option when needing to replace two or more teeth. Implant-supported bridges are similar to regular dental bridges in that they are made of one or more prosthetic teeth that fit in between existing teeth, creating a “bridge.” With implant-supported bridges, the bridge is attached to a dental implant. Implant-supported dental bridges are a great option for those who need to replace more than two missing teeth, but not a full set of teeth.
- Implant-supported Dentures: Implant-supported dentures are the favored option for those requiring replacement of a full set of teeth. Implant-supported dentures use three to five implants to anchor specially designed dentures within the mouth. These dentures are removable for cleaning, yet will stay firmly in place during daily activities like eating and talking. Implant-supported dentures allow you to eat the foods you love without the risk of denture slippage or the use of messy denture glues.
